Festival of Business: Brazil is a hot spot for growth

Brazil, the world’s eighth biggest economy is a powerful draw for exporters.

Why now? Why not,” says Peter O’Sullivan, sales director at Essex-based Plastic Extruders about his first business trip to Brazil.

With inquiries coming in from potential distributors, the Telegraph 1000* company has decided to scope out the market and join a trade mission to Sao Paulo and Rio de Janeiro organised by the London Chamber of Commerce and Industry.

“The reason I am here is that they are saying Brazil is the eighth biggest economy by GDP and there has to be a market for our products here. I have not found one yet where there is not,” says Mr O’Sullivan, on his way to a steakhouse on the outskirts of Sao Paulo.

His 49 year-old company, which trades as Plastex and employs 78 people in the UK and US, exports around two thirds of its £11.5m turnover.

It sells its plastic safety matting and packaging products to 48 countries, mainly in Europe, the US and the Middle East, but nothing as yet to Latin America.
After a tough 2009, the company posted its best ever year of trading in 2010 and with the UK economy losing momentum, Plastex is looking to do more overseas in countries like Brazil.

Approached at a recent trade fair in Hannover by three potential Brazilian distributors, Mr O’Sullivan says he is now keen to know whether Plastex can do more. Read full article…
